Arocena Cup Final Scores for Semester 1, 2008-2009 School Year

Congratulations to all my classes and the teams that competed in this semester's Arocena Cup. The final scores are as follows with the winning teams in italics.

Science 9 Arocena Cup Champions!

So after a long semester of competition, both Team Cool and Team Frick'n Awesome tied for the highest mark on the Term 2 Exam (Mia and Bryanna both scored 84) so the next highest mark was taken to break the tie. This time it was a great effort from Amy and Erica to clinch the victory for Team Frick'n Awesome!

Physics 12 Arocena Cup Champions!!

So after a long semester and some hard fought Jeopardy reviews and physics competitions. The final tally is

Team Obsolutely Omazing (Team O) - 8
The He-man Woman Haters Club (Team E) - 9

It looked liked Team O would take the lead as Kathleen maintained the highest mark on the Term 2 Exam until an 11th hour effort from Frank & Hendrik tied her mark. So the next highest mark was taken which went to Jeremy W! So congrats to Jeremy W and The He-man Woman Haters Club for taking the cup in a nail biting semester.

Also anyone wishing to rewrite any test or exam may do so until Wednesday of next week. Just come and see me.

Arocena Cup Update

Update for the Arocena Cup.

In Block 2: I forgot to tally up the points for highest mark on the tests we've done so Team Cookie Monster gained 3 points and Team Elmo gained 1 to bring the scores to 11 for Team Cookie Monster and 7 for Team Elmo. Looks like Team Cookie Monster has clinched the victory.

In Block 3: The last test had Bryanna scoring the highest but she's already got a point for her team so I looked at the next highest which was a tie between Maria and Erica, neither scored yet so I looked at the next pair which was Rylan and Mya. Since Mya already scored the point went to Rylan and Team Frick'n Awesome takes the lead 13 to 12. But there's still two more points to get so Team Cool may yet win this!

In Block 4: After another heated Jeopardy match, The He-Man Woman Haters club walked away with an resounding 2600 to 0 victory which ties everything up at 8 a piece.

Also, I am still looking to take a team of students to the 31st Annual UBC Physics Olympics. As far as prizes go, participating in this event will look mighty impressive on any university/college applications you submit as well as for any scholarships you may be applying for. It will show your scientific ability as well as your ability to think out of the box.
The deadline to register is February 9th so I need responses preferably before the end of exam week so I can mail everything in on time.

Also this will be at least the second time NVSS has sent a team down as I ran across a District 91 news item from 1998 that had a Physics class attend the event. Couldn't find the ranking of NVSS then, but if we go I'm sure we'll do better!

Update on the Arocena Cup, Team Cool takes the lead by getting the highest score on the Ch. 7 Test.
Rylan and Sammy both tied for highest, but the top 3 marks for Team Cool were higher than the top 3 marks for Team Frick'n Awesome.

Luckily for Team Frick'n Awesome, they had the highest average mark for Term 1 so that earns their entire team another point and thus the scores are even once again at 12 a piece.

Scores are now Team Cool - 12 and Team Frick'n Awesome - 12
