Calculus 12 - Arocena Cup Team Merger

Since a few have dropped the class the teams have become a little lopsided.  So I've decided to merge some of the teams to foster more competition in this last week of classes.

Team Asia has been merged with The Conquistadores to form Team AC and Team Absent has been merged with the Fantastic Four to form Team Absent Four (or the Fantastic Absentees?)

As a result of the merger and the last question on the last two tests, both teams are tied at 25 points.

Three review challenges await the teams this week and a Street Fighter tournament on Wednesday!

Good luck to the teams!

Calculus 12 - Challenge 5 Results

Close one as the Fantastic Four and Team Asia?? submitted their answers at the same time.  Fortunately for Team Asia??, they had a more complete proof for problem 1 compared to the Fantastic Four so they earn 4 points.  The Fantastic Four will pick 3 and The Conquistadores will earn 2.

Also all teams earned 2 extra points for completing proof 4 but I will give the Conquistadores an extra point because Emile proved it in a completely different, yet legitimate way.  Math is wonderful that way!

Scores are now
Team Asia - 17
The Conquistadores - 18
The Fantastic Four - 12
Team ?? - 14

Team ?? earn 2 because of not giving exact values and Team Asia earn 1 because of not giving exact values and not getting the most efficient attack correct (though I will give them props for their subliminal messages on the last question)

Scores are now Team Asia with 10, The Conquistadores with 13, the Fantastic Four with 7 and Team ?? with 8.

Unfortunately with Challenge 3 (from Tuesday) I didn't include a tiebreaker question and everyone had good answers so no point was earned from that.  Although hopefully it makes you guys think a little more about the cool relationships the various formulas you have studied in physics have with each other.

UPDATE: Carrie played a very dominant Cammy in today's Street Fighter tournament and earns Team Asia another point.

Also good job to everyone for attempting the proofs and doing a good job for the most part.  Most impressed with Katie's attempt at proving the fourth equation and had she more time I'm sure she would have gotten it.

Will post an update to the scores later this weekend once I get around to looking at everyone's proofs.

I did not have time to make a video for the class yet (lost power Saturday and busy Sunday) so the ones from Khan Academy will have to do.

https://www.khanacademy.org/math/differential-calculus/taking-derivatives/power_rule_tutorial/v/power-rule

You probably only need to watch the first video (Power Rule) and the third video (Derivative Properties and Polynomial Derivatives).

I'll try to get my own uploaded soon so it's a better match to what we normally do in class.

Also congrats to Team Asia for winning our Pi Day Street Fighter challenge.  This brings them up to 9 points (within 1 from the first place Conquistadors).  I will add more once I finish going over the rest of the Pi Day Challenge assignment.

Calculus 12 - Arocena Cup Update

So no actual new material on Friday.  Not enough of the class was present so we just went over some questions from the 2.2 assignments.

And then continued with the Arocena Cup competition.

Suffice to say Team Conquistadors (formerly Team BAE) is pretty dominant in the Friday tournament with Emile winning again (though Carrie appears to be getting the hang of it and put up a decent fight in the final round).  This earns another point for Team Conquistadors and puts them at 3 points now with Team ?? at 1 and the others still at 0.

Hopefully this coming week will allow the other teams to earn some points.

Math 11 - New Way of Grading

So here is a slightly more in-depth explanation to my new grading practice in Math 11.

Here is the section taken directly from the course outline I provided to everyone in class.
Grades
In this class you will earn credits for things you do.  Your grade will be dependent on how many credits you earn by the time you reach the end of the semester.  What follows is how many credits are necessary to earn a particular grade.

Grade
Credits Needed
A
650
B
550
C+
500
C
450
C-
400
D
300
F
0
The attached sheet gives details on how you can earn credits as well as how you can lose credits.  All credits are tracked on the Class Dojo website (https://www.classdojo.com/) and smartphone app.

My reason for marking this way is quite simple.  It mirrors many things students would encounter in life outside of school.  For instance, the idea of getting credits (or as I refer to it, getting paid) for doing something is basically what our entire lives are built on.  You do work you get paid.

The idea of starting at 0 is common place in a lot of things as well, most notably games.  Most games you start with nothing and work your way up by doing stuff.  You do something in a game and you often get rewarded if it's completed.

I based the credit requirements on a lot of factors, how many days of school, the number of assignments, labs, projects and tests I would give as well as the number of achievements.  I left a little room for flexibility and added the idea of overtime assignments to make up or gain extra credits (what a novel idea, extra pay for extra work).  I also only took account one block per day when calculating the credits based on days and since we have a double block day once a week, the students have the potential to earn 6 credits for that day instead of the usual 3.

Below is a short sampling of what students can do to get credits

Task
Credits Earned
Arriving to Class
+3 per block
Completed Assignment
+3 per assignment
Completed Project/Lab
+5 per project/lab
Test, Lab, Project Passed
+5 per pass
Scored A on Test, Lab or Project
+5 per A
Scored B on Test, Lab or Project
+4 per B
Scored C+ on Test, Lab or Project
+3 per C+
Scored C on Test, Lab or Project
+2 per C
Scored C- on Test, Lab or Project
+1 per C-
Achievement Earned
+5 per achievement
Overtime Assignment
Variable
and listed here are things students can do to lose credits
Task
Credits Lost
Arriving Late to Class
-1 per incident
Leaving Class Early
-2 per incident
Test Rewrite
-1 per rewrite
Inappropriate use of Technology
-1 per incident
Disrespect
-1 per incident

I tried to mirror the losses to things that might reflect a workplace.  So I keep referring to if you go to work late you make less,  Similarly if you leave work early you make less.  Test rewrites were meant to mirror tests you take outside of school like driving tests and professional qualifying tests.  They all require a fee to write and if you write them multiple times you have to pay the fee multiple times.  I also know many work places have negative consequences surrounding inappropriate technological use or disrespect towards employees, employers or customers.

One of the neat things about doing this is that it actually meets a few of the Prescribed Learning Outcomes for this class.

  • C2 - Solve problems involving personal budgets
    • The students have an actual income and can budget it appropriately.  They have something they have to save towards (a grade) and have expenses (test rewrites, lates, leaving early, etc)
  • E1 - Solve problems that involve creating and interpreting graphs
    • ClassDojo does a great job of displaying their data in a nice circle graph that I can use to run analytic exercises with the students once we have accumulated enough data.
  • C1 - Analyze puzzles and games that involve numerical reasoning using problem-solving strategies.
    • The whole class is now a game involving numbers and it's up to them to solve it,

#5, 9
#17 (pick 3)
#21, 22
#24, 29

Also teams for the Arocena Cup have been made.

Team Asia - Samira, Carrie and Charles
The Fantastic Four - Dakota, Caleb, Dara and Colter

And new this semester
Team BAE - Becket, Alex, Emile
Team ? - Sarah, Katie, Alison

First challenge was accepted and it was Team BAE who came up with the best solution first for making the most money.  Team ? had a good idea as well, but it was not going to make as much money as what Team BAE suggested.  So first point to Team BAE.

However Team ? was able to gain a point for themselves as they won the inaugural Calculus 12 Street Fighter 4 Friday tournament.

So scores are
Team ? - 1
Team BAE - 1
The Fantastic Four - 0
Team Asia - 0

Looks like some fierce competition this semester.  Good luck to everyone!

Math 12 - Final Update for the Arocena Cup

Well fought by all teams.  Some final points to add before the winners are announced (I'll ask Ms. Scott announce the winners next week).

Team Asia:
+1 as Ryzel was the only one to use an exponential function for the hat selling question on the Final Exam (what I intended)
+1 for having the most 100%s on the various chapter tests throughout the semester (10 aces!)
+1 for tying the most completed bonus assignments (tied with Team ??)
+1 for the jar of honey.  Totally unexpected but a very appreciated gift nonetheless.

The Fantastic 4:
+1 for having the highest average for the semester (92.7% between the 4 members!)
+1 for having the most interesting comic on the Chapter 10-11 test (good job Dakota!)
+1 for Dara earning the highest mark on the Final Exam.

Team #Diversity:
+1 for having the most members ready for each test. (Good job Emile and Sahej for being almost always ready!)

Team ??:
+1 for tying the most completed bonus assignments (tied with Team Asia)

And with that I believe Team Asia takes the Arocena Cup for this semester with 17 points.  The Fantastic 4 were a very close second with 16 points.  Team ?? takes 3rd with 14 points and Team #Diversity bring up the rear with 13 points.

Team Asia, your names will be added to the Cup later this week and I'll provide all team members with a treat next week.  Traditionally it's been cinnamon buns (usually for teams of 6+) and for smaller teams I've given each individual mini-cheesecakes.  Alternatively I could make Siapao (to complete the Asian win).  If none of you respond it'll be up to me to decide and a complete surprise on Tuesday next week.

Congratulations again to Team Asia!

Math 12 - Arocena Cup Update

First, Team ? has been renamed to Team #Diversity.

Second, congratulations to Team ?? for winning the Mr. Arocena Trivia Jeopardy!  This puts them in a tie for first place with 13 points.  The Fantastic Four scored 3 points (for a total of 13), while Asia picked up 2 points (for a total of 13) and #Diversity got the lone point for last place (for a total of 12).

Competition got way closer than what I intended but that just means it might be a winner take all during Friday's competition.

Math 12 Arocena Cup Update

Congrats to Samira for winning a round against me in our Arocena Cup challenge.  Doing so gives Team Asia 2 points to shoot them up to 10 points.
However, Dakota was able to win a match against me and earns The Fantastic Four 3 points and that puts them at 10 points as well.

Well done to both Dara and Sahej for almost beating me in a round despite their lack of experience.

Good job on the quiz too!
