Calculus 12 - Arocena Cup Team Merger

Since a few have dropped the class the teams have become a little lopsided.  So I've decided to merge some of the teams to foster more competition in this last week of classes.

Team Asia has been merged with The Conquistadores to form Team AC and Team Absent has been merged with the Fantastic Four to form Team Absent Four (or the Fantastic Absentees?)

As a result of the merger and the last question on the last two tests, both teams are tied at 25 points.

Three review challenges await the teams this week and a Street Fighter tournament on Wednesday!

Good luck to the teams!

Challenge 8 Results

Team Absent Asia - +3
The Fantastic Four - +1

Team Absent +1 for being the team to find the maximum revenue and price to charge first.
The Conquistadores +1 for winning our Street Fighter Friday tournament.

Alex also earned The Conquistadores a point for what he could make from a bunch of random items from the Chapter 4 test.

Scores are now

Team Absent - 26

The Conquistadores - 24
The Fantastic Four - 19

Calculus 12 - Challenge 6 and 7 Results

I totally forgot to update the scores based on Challenge 6 and 7.

After Challenge 6
The Fantastic Four - +4 Total: 16
Team Absent - +3 Total: 17
Team Asia - +2 Total: 19
Team Conquistadores - +1 Total: 19

After Challenge 7
Team Absent +4 Total: 21
Team Asia +3 Total: 22
The Fantastic Four +2 Total: 18
Team Conquistadores +1 Total: 20

Also Katie gets +1 for Team Absent for her Math Ninja comic.  So Team Absent is at 22.

Scores are getting closer!

Calculus 12 - Challenge 5 Results

Close one as the Fantastic Four and Team Asia?? submitted their answers at the same time.  Fortunately for Team Asia??, they had a more complete proof for problem 1 compared to the Fantastic Four so they earn 4 points.  The Fantastic Four will pick 3 and The Conquistadores will earn 2.

Also all teams earned 2 extra points for completing proof 4 but I will give the Conquistadores an extra point because Emile proved it in a completely different, yet legitimate way.  Math is wonderful that way!

Scores are now
Team Asia - 17
The Conquistadores - 18
The Fantastic Four - 12
Team ?? - 14

Also examples of Implicit Differentiation are shown below.

Calculus 12 - Pi Day Challenge Winners!

Got around to marking the Pi Day Challenge questions and here are the winners!

The Fantastic Four earn 4 points for getting all things correct but having a slightly more amusing answer to the last question than The Conquistadores.

The Conquistadores earn 3 for getting all things correct.

Team ?? earn 2 because of not giving exact values and Team Asia earn 1 because of not giving exact values and not getting the most efficient attack correct (though I will give them props for their subliminal messages on the last question)

Scores are now Team Asia with 10, The Conquistadores with 13, the Fantastic Four with 7 and Team ?? with 8.

Unfortunately with Challenge 3 (from Tuesday) I didn't include a tiebreaker question and everyone had good answers so no point was earned from that.  Although hopefully it makes you guys think a little more about the cool relationships the various formulas you have studied in physics have with each other.

UPDATE: Carrie played a very dominant Cammy in today's Street Fighter tournament and earns Team Asia another point.

Also good job to everyone for attempting the proofs and doing a good job for the most part.  Most impressed with Katie's attempt at proving the fourth equation and had she more time I'm sure she would have gotten it.

Will post an update to the scores later this weekend once I get around to looking at everyone's proofs.

#7-16 (pick 2 odd, 1 even)

I did not have time to make a video for the class yet (lost power Saturday and busy Sunday) so the ones from Khan Academy will have to do.

https://www.khanacademy.org/math/differential-calculus/taking-derivatives/power_rule_tutorial/v/power-rule

You probably only need to watch the first video (Power Rule) and the third video (Derivative Properties and Polynomial Derivatives).

I'll try to get my own uploaded soon so it's a better match to what we normally do in class.

Also congrats to Team Asia for winning our Pi Day Street Fighter challenge.  This brings them up to 9 points (within 1 from the first place Conquistadors).  I will add more once I finish going over the rest of the Pi Day Challenge assignment.

Calculus 12 - Arocena Cup Update

So no actual new material on Friday.  Not enough of the class was present so we just went over some questions from the 2.2 assignments.

And then continued with the Arocena Cup competition.

Suffice to say Team Conquistadors (formerly Team BAE) is pretty dominant in the Friday tournament with Emile winning again (though Carrie appears to be getting the hang of it and put up a decent fight in the final round).  This earns another point for Team Conquistadors and puts them at 3 points now with Team ?? at 1 and the others still at 0.

Hopefully this coming week will allow the other teams to earn some points.

Calculus 12 - Arocena Cup Update

First, 1.5 assignment is as follows
1.5 Exercises p.57
#3, 4
#5, 9
#17 (pick 3)
#21, 22
#24, 29

Also teams for the Arocena Cup have been made.

Returning from last semester's PreCalculus 12 class
Team Asia - Samira, Carrie and Charles
The Fantastic Four - Dakota, Caleb, Dara and Colter

And new this semester
Team BAE - Becket, Alex, Emile
Team ? - Sarah, Katie, Alison

First challenge was accepted and it was Team BAE who came up with the best solution first for making the most money.  Team ? had a good idea as well, but it was not going to make as much money as what Team BAE suggested.  So first point to Team BAE.

However Team ? was able to gain a point for themselves as they won the inaugural Calculus 12 Street Fighter 4 Friday tournament.

So scores are
Team ? - 1
Team BAE - 1
The Fantastic Four - 0
Team Asia - 0

Looks like some fierce competition this semester.  Good luck to everyone!
