Naming Alkenes

Also, I totally missed an important thing when naming alkenes and alkynes you choose the longest carbon chain that contains the double or triple bond, with the triple bond taking precedence over the double bond.

So basically if a chain is longer but doesn't include the double bond it doesn't count. Same thing with a triple bond.

Trigonometric Identities part 1

Arocena Cup Update

Been a while but here are some updates to the Arocena Cup

Block A
Eddie earns the Evens a point for a high score on the Chapter 5 part 1 test and Taylor D earns a point for the Odds for a high score on the Chapter 5 part 2 test. Scores are now 8 to 7 in favour of the Odds.

Block B
The odds jumped to a whopping 21 points due to everyone being on time for class. However Dennis and Tyrell answered back with high scores for tests and brings them to within 7. Scores are 21 to 14 for the Odds.

Block C
Monique and Trevor pick up a point each for the Evens (for high scores on the Modern Atom test and Stoichiometry test) which ties things up at 6 points for the Odds and Evens.

Block D
Taylor D earns a point for the Odds for a high score on the Chapter 4 test, Janelle earns a point for the Odds for a high score on the Chapter 6 test and Gabe earns a point for a high score on the chapter 7 test. This makes it 6 to 5 in favour of the Odds.

Summer Holidays!

Well another school year is finished with us.

I hope you all learned something in your classes with me. Unfortunately I won't be around NVSS next year but I'll still be in the district. From what I understand the Physics trip to Playland will now be a district initiative so for those taking Physics 11/12 you may still have an opportunity to go next year if you didn't this year!

For those who are wondering, I will be teaching at FLESS next year and for the foreseeable future. I do hope to return to NVSS soon even though it might be too late to see some of you guys graduate, but maybe your younger siblings (if you have any) might get the honour of competing for the Arocena Cup.

Congratulations to all the teams that won the Arocena Cup over the past few years at NVSS, rest assured it will be back at NVSS ready for a new generation and your names will be on the cup until forever (I lose the computer file that has all the names of the winners)

The victory goes to Team Odds thanks to Sarah & Johanna's 'low' percent error of 59% in our rocketry lab! All the % errors were a little high so I will have to revise the lab for next time.

Back from Playland

We made it back yesterday and I'd like to thank all of the students, Ms. Hampe and our bus driver Dave for coming and participating in this event.  It was lots of fun and I hope you students learned something or at least reinforced some of the things you have already learned.

Off to Playland

This morning we head out to Playland with our motley crew of 18 physics & biology students to study the science of amusement parks and get a tour of UBC.

Any assignments that are given out by the substitute will be due when I get back (Thursday).

Arocena Cup Update

Some updates to the Arocena Cup

In block 1, Kaitlin scored the highest on the Waves test and the Odds built a marble roller coaster worth more than what the Evens built.  They now have an 11-8 lead over the Evens!

In Block 2, the Evens won another review game and now have a 5-3 lead over the Odds.

Block 4 is holding steady with 10 points.

Playland Primer

To all my physics students, you guys are going to have a lot of fun at Playland.  I got to go on the rides today with a bunch of other teachers to get a feel for the experiments you guys are going to be doing, and let me tell you, it is going to be lots of fun!  You can really get going on that wooden roller coaster and it is amazing how many Gs you experience on the corners.

If any of you still want to go, there's room for 1 or 2 more at the hostel.  Just get your names to me and your payment to Mrs. Horita before the end of the week and I'll add you to the list.

We're going to be doing a little amusement park physics on Thursday and Friday to help you guys get prepared for the trip on May 3rd.

Arocena Cup Champions for Semester 1 '09-'10 School year

The Semester has drawn to a close and it's time to announce the winners of the Arocena Cup!

In Block 1 - The Evens Almighty battled back from several deficits and emerged victorious thanks to the efforts of Nyla on the last test of the semester!
Congratulations to Brett, Nyla, Visal, Josh, Emily, Rebecca, Kalie, Spencer, Jonah and Brin!

In Block 3 - Team Evens clinched the victory early in the last review game as Team Odds gave up when it looked like the Evens were running away with the game.
Congratulations to James, Landon, Tyler, Zachary, Shae-Lyn, Stephen, Scot, Payden, Leah, Natalya, and Rachelle!

In Block 4 - The Evens fought off a late semester comeback from The Odds and thanks to the wonderful car built by Adam & Jessica, the Evens walked away with the victory.

Last day of regular classes was today.

Congratulations to The Evens Almighty for winning the Arocena Cup in Block 1 with a score of 15-14. Nyla scored the cup winning point in the Chapter 9 test. Well done to all in Block 1!

Congratulations to Team Evens for winning the Arocena Cup in Block 3 with a score of 12 to 9. The winner was decided in our last review game when the Evens got an 'I quit' from Team Tomahawk. That sealed the victory and Rachelle just padded their lead with her high score on the Chapter 9 test.

But in Block 1 the Evens did tie up the scores at 14 each after our vicious airplane review game. This means the Chapter 9 test is going to be the tiebreaker to determine who will win the cup in Block 1!

Also in Block 3, congratulations to Rachelle for earning the point for having the highest mark on the Chapter 9 test! This solidifies Team Evens win in Block 3 with a 12 to 9 victory.

Arocena Cup update

Some updates to the scores for the Arocena Cup

In Block 1:
- The Girls and James earn another point for the highest mark on the chapter 6 test (thanks to Rylee) but the Evens Almighty earned 2 points in the Wii-lympics competition we held before the break. Scores are now 13 to 11 in favour of The Girls and James.
- There are 2 more chapters which means 2 more tests and 2 more review games so the Evens Almighty still have a good chance of winning.

In Block 3:
- The Evens earn a point on the Chapter 6 test (thanks to Leah) and bring the scores even at 8 a piece.
- There are 2 more chapters which means 2 more tests and 2 more review games so it is still anyone's game.

In Block 4:
- The best Rube Goldberg machines went to Cameron and Keven so earned a point for the Evens. Scores are now 11-8 in favour of the Odds.
- There are three opportunities for points left in the semester (from a purely academic standpoint) - the nuclear physics research essay, the modern physics presentation and the mousetrap car race - so it is still possible for the Evens to catch up and maybe snatch victory away from the Odds, but they will have to put in a monumental effort to do so.


For any class, if we have the time, you may get a chance to compete in the Wii-lympics like my Block 1 Science 9 class to earn more points for your team.
